Raised in Downtown Toronto before moving to Nova Scotia to pursue an Architecture degree, Rachel Hawkes Cameron strives to capture the profound energy that can emerge from significant shifts; using the building of layers to unearth and navigate the confrontation of difficult memories.
By weaving fragmented shapes through washes of saturated colour, spontaneous collisions are revealed, allowing for the materials to dictate composition and offer a voice to stories that can be too painful to tell. Massive Skies is her first completely on paper, are an attempt to chart the collision of these memories, those which often ensues from a sudden change — its fracturing of what was once familiar and sudden splintering of one’s false sense of safety. Recollections of mood and time produce an unending navigation, a disentangling of our collective identity.
Massive Skies opens with a reception at WEP Central (3 Bartlett) on July 20th at 5 PM with drinks and refreshments!
